Michalik Baby Naming Contest

Help us name our upcoming baby BOY!

Andrew and Baby

Jan 22 - FINAL Update
GRAND PRIZE WINNERS

Congratulations MarkM and BabyNaymes for choosing “Alexander Ignatius Michalik”. Though we realize a few people submitted “Alexander”, Mark called it first - good choice everyone! Norma picked Ignatius - maybe half jokingly, but hey, we liked it.  Sorry Norma, you don’t win the Remote Controlled Sumo Wrestlers for that one - the Grand prize will have to do.  Thanks everyone for making this a fun and challenging experience.  We’re going to archive a copy of the site for Lex’s baby book.  This way he’ll know which aunts and uncles to smile at or poop near depending upon your submissions.

He’s a Big One: 10 lbs 7.2 oz, 21.5 inches tall

Uncle Ginsu’s Thoughts on the Blessed Event

Jan 21 - “Clever (but-not-quite-clever-enough)” Prize Awarded
Kevin Lane and Coburn came the closest to finding their name suggestions on the Michalik Family Tree. “Maximus Flash Michalik” was our working name for all of December and we were all set to name him that, that is until we saw him. He just didn’t seem like a “Max” and though Barb loved the name “Flash” we found a middle name that we thought more of a fit with his new first name. So a set of steak knives from Ginsu International go to Kevin and Coburn.  We will be calling you for your mailing address in the next couple of days!Stay tuned! We expect to announce the Official, on-the-actual-birth-certificate name tomorrow evening (after we’ve signed the official birth certificate)!

Jan 20 - “Wish We Could, but We Just Can’t Do It” Prize Awarded

Sumo Challenge

CabinLiving submitted “Dr. Doom” on December 17th, and Barbara really, really wanted that to be his middle name. Exactly why? You’ll need to ask her for the full answer. Although we both thought our son would consider that a way cool name, Andrew had to veto it. So the Radio-Controlled Sumo Wrestlers were delivered to CabinLiving this evening, complete with batteries!

Holy Cow! Two First Prizes!!?? January 13th Update

Congratulations to Barbara and Andrew!  Alexander is a great name! That name is prestigious and can be shortened to Alex which is also cool.  It is about time for another Alexander the great.

Men will fear him, women will love him. Or course with this name expect motorcycles and leather jackets to be on his Santa Wish list, but that will better than tea sets and tutus that some of those other names will get you.

G Davis submitted: Since Andrew and Amelia (both A’s) we need the young lad to have his name start with a B (I know this is quirky). Anyway I have always like the name Brighton - only I would spell it with a “Y” Bryghton or Bryton. I even like the name Bryson Isaiah.

If we went away from the B, I love the name Jaliel and I like the name Chandler.

Andy is submitting: Merlin, Tyrone, Lucretia (so he doesn’t get teased), Lucifer (if he’s bad), Jesus (for the good guy), Yao-Min (desires life); Ping-Ahn (peace); Ishmaiel, Mohammed, Fritz, Adolf, Hidioshi, Silas, Nigel, Marvin, Homer; Fido (if he turns out to be a puppy). Did we win?

I like Noah. Its a very old name, yet it’s most famous bearer was a radical - and entrusted with a very important responsibility. Another famous Noah, Mr. Webster has been called the “Father of American Scholarship and Education”.

Alternatively, while the name of many a religious prophet has been bestowed upon children, how often do you encounter someone named Zarathustra? Some credit Zarathustra (or the Greek, Zoroaster) as one of the originators of monotheism. Wow. As an added bonus, your son wouldn’t have to decide on a theme song.

So I’m sitting here in Bryce Canyon and it’s below 0 and I thought my ABAB logic would be the clear choice.. then I thought Bryce would be fitting and hence the perfect B….I had dreams of a second NUVI, one for the passenger to explore alternate routes while I drove with my faithful compadre…then I read several others that beat me too it and jenmkim who did it exactly and for the same reasons…crushed, I still maintain BRYCE is the name.

However, I don’t go down without a fight…so here’s a few more, in some semblance of a priority grouping, that might just outdo it, abandoning the ABAB theory, land me some prizes and more importantly participation in Michalik family history…

Asher - (I like the idea of mother hen “B” and her “A”s)

The latest rash of B names I have found:

Beres (as in Beres Hammond, reggae extraordinaire)
Bear (as in Bear Grylls, Man vs. Wild)
Beavis (my sister gave me this nickname)
Banana Hammock (was Phoebe’s last name on Friends for a short time)
Beatty or Beady, especially if he is born with small eyes narrowly set apart
Ziggy - then you would cover A -Z in the alphabet!
Hatch - seems appropriate given his antics

PROPER names, not surnames turned into first names like Keegan, Taylor, or for that matter Coolidge (that’s the logical conclusion of this sort of naming predilection). No ‘West Coast’ names like Skylar or Wade. Don’t do made up names either, like Ja Ron, Javon or indeed Da Bob cause they’re shit unlike the names below…

    (In no particular order)
    Alexander
    Nathaniel
    Lysander

If you can’t decide then I decree that his default name shall be ‘Skeeter’. That should concentrate the mind.

No baby, no name yet? My niece just had her bebe today & named her Emma Brooke. Going to visit in OK tomorrow.

I was thinking of your dilemma and a new name came to mind, how about “Balta-thor.” Then he won’t be confused when he arrives b/c his new name will sound similar to the one he’s already used to hearing. Or “Ben-Ian.” Nothing wrong with a good solid hebrew name. Starts with a “b” too.

“Huggles” works for me, too. I wanted to name my son Happy, but again, Kev wouldn’t let me, not even for a middle.

There is only one choice Alexander !

The historical figure of Alexander the Great (r.336-323 BC) is one surrounded by many questions concerning his association with religion, and notions of his personal divinity.  Based on his parents this time there will be no doubt about his divinity. http://grad.usask.ca/gateway/archive25.htm

Here are some names I like:

    - Finneas (alternately spelled Phineas, or Phinneas- which in Hebrew means ‘Oracle’, or ‘Mouth of prophecy’- and naturally, I’m biased, because I work with Oracle all day. Also too- there’s the infamous Phineas Gage, who revolutionized neuroscience by surviving a three foot long tamping iron being blasted through his skull and brains. …That guy was a tough [mf].)

    - Austin (Its where my sister lives, but I think also a very cool boy name.)

    - Buzz (yeah- its so Fifties, but it would totally complete the A & B & A… binary scheme, and I’ve always thought it would be cool to have a name like Buzz, Fuzzy, Buster, Curly, or something like that. And of course, there was Buzz Aldrin, who was the second person to set foot on the Moon.)

That’s all I can think of now- but just be wary of names that rhyme with anything that could be an insult (like Mary/Hairy), or anything that has a difficult phonetic spelling- or everybody will end up thinking that Stephen is actually Steven, and then you always have to go through the arduous process of *explaining* to everybody that it isn’t the correct way to say your name, etc…

Oh- and invariably, your child, or the people around your child, will shorten their name to something that is monosyllabic- so William always becomes Will or Bill, and so on.

People are lazy- you could give your kid the greatest name ever, but if it amounts to more than a distinct primate grunt- people are going to [scramble] it.

being that we are in the IT field, I was thinking that the name should have some symbolic logic to it. (being the nerd that I am)

I tried to think of the same name meaning for Amelia which means industrious, the boy’s name that means industrious is jihad.
hmm, not a good name, at least if you still want to live in the U.S. (could you imaging the TSA guys at the airport…)

so my next logic quotient is a follows:
you are a & b Michalik for Andrew and Barbara
you have already an “a” junior so you need a “b” junior…
so in the theme of “b”….
    I would say….
    barak (this could be presidential…)
    bailey (I'll drink to that…)
    barnard (brings up barney fife….)
benjy (makes me think of a bone…)
    Blake (wasn’t he on Dynasty…)
    butch (uh no….)

    seriously, I like to logic of a & b.
    I think that I like
    bryce michalik
    brandon michalik
    brendon michalik

I think you should continue with the Amelia Earhart theme.
Based on that I have many suggestions:
(mostly to increase my odds of getting a sumo wrestler)

    Other Famous Aviators
Lindbergh might be a good first name
Lindy also would be a good name or Charles
Amelia Earhart was nick-named Lady Lindy

    Her Parents were
Samuel “Edwin” Stanton Earhart and Amelia Otis Earhart
So Edwin or Otis are possibilities, as is Sam and Stanton

She went missing near Howland island.
    Howland is an interesting name.

There are lost of other famous aviators
    Howard Hughes
    Chuck Yeager
    Orville and Wilbur Wright
    Harriet Quimby
I include her because of the last name.
You could make the baby’s first name
    Hughes, Yeager, or Quimby

    Don’t forget.
    Clyde ‘Upside-Down’ Pangborn
    Douglas ‘Wrong Way’ Corrigan
    Roscoe Turner
    Calbraith Perry (’Cal’) Rodgers

    And then there are Astronauts
    Buzz Aldrin
    Neil A. Armstrong
    John Glenn
    James Lovell, Jr.
Again look at first & last names.

Well, I think I have stacked the deck enough.
I have to leave room for someone else…

Beer is apparently a Bible name. No kid can go wrong with a Bible Name.
And Buzz was the name of one of the first of many great astronauts, Buzz Aldridge.
Therefore, my latest vote is for Beer Buzz Michalik.

And how about Brock? Coupled with your last name, again, it’s another one of those names with a nice ring to it. If he grows up to be a rapper, he can go by the name B-Rock M.

  49. Zoltan Says: December 6th, 2007 at 11:26 pm

As a “Zoltan” I strongly recommend something “non-exotic” such as “Walt” for a first name and (if you insist) an exotic name, such as “Zoltan” as a second name.*

In my opinion, “Michalik” is enough of an “exotic” name to hang on a baby. Just the opinion of someone who has been through all this “name” nonsense as follows:

Assume you are 8 years old:
    “What’s your name?”
    “Zoltan Harasty”
“How do you spell it?” “z-o-l-t-a-n h-a-r-a-s-t-y”
“Is Zoltan your first or last name?”
    “Zoltan is my first name.”
“What nationality is that?” ” Hungarian”

And then if the conversation does not take place face-to-face, the crowning question– “Are you a boy or girl?!!!”
Go through that several hundred times when you are a kid, and now you know why I use “Walt”.

Just my thoughts.  Zoltan A. “Walt” Harasty
*(I would have preferred “Walt Zoltan Harasty” as a reasonable compromise)
    (How about John Sobieski Michalik?)

Remember Lukie was your nickname that Grandma gave to you.
Or if you wanted to name it after the two Grandfather’s Benjamin Floyd Michalik.

From the looks of the sonogram he will probably be Too Tall Michalik. It looks like he will be about 22 inches long. See how close I come in length.

Tomasz (pronounced tom-ash) Michalik - going for the Polish angle here

Charles (Chuck) Michalik - pick this at your peril. At the very least he’ll hate you & being called Chuck he’s bound to vote Republican…..

Hello Barb and Andrew, Ok, last night at work I thought of a cool name for the little man. Maximus Nash Machalik. Or any “N” middle name like Nathanel, but then he can be called MNM for a nickname. Maximus means “The Greatest”, Nash is just a cool name.

OK OK if you have to have a “B” name, there’s:
Brendan/Brendon (I liked for our son but Kev did not)
    Bjorn
    Bjork?

I really liked the name Micah, too. or Morpheus Jonas - MoJo for short.
    Gomez Ulyssey Michalik (GUM)

Hello my favorite couple in California! Although my wife seems to think BM are not good initials for a person, it seems to me that u r really wanting a B-named child to go with Andrew and barb and Amelia and——-What shall it be? First, Don’t u have enough suggestions already? Second, My wife really wants a GPS system. Third, What if several persons suggest the same name? What to do? I mean there r so many suggestions already. But, here is the Name— Braden James Machalik. I miss u guys. Congrats!

  62. happylanes Says: December 4th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Beware of any name that would leave your child with the initials B.M. He would carry lifelong scars and hate you forever.

I like: Chick Michalik - it’s got a nice ring to it
or Kai Omega Michalik (Kai = Ocean, Omega = Last ((unless you were going to add to the litter))

Daiken (previous post) reminds me of Daikon in Japanese, meaning Little Radish. That might be cool. He did sorta look like a little radish in the early photos.) Pronounced “Die-cone”

Tristan (previous post) was in the Top 2 of 2006 names, so ….X

Other names requiring further exploration and combination:
    Evan
    Finn
    Ethan
    Gage
    Grant
    Callaghan
    Cash
    Harry
Eddie - everybody likes a guy named Eddie
    Watson
    Ace
    Duff
    Julian
    Speed
Bryce (maybe as a middle name, again B.M., not a good combo)
    Little Andy?
    Teddy
    Rock or Rocky
    Mitch
Jasper (when no ones around you can affectionately call him Jaz or Jazzy)
    Jack
    Logan
And there’s always Dallas, Austin, or Houston

    OK last one for me:

    Baron Othello Orion Michalik

Yes that makes him B.O.O.M so you could call him “Boomer” for short

Late at night and trying to win the geek award: Blaise Pascal Michalik — (getting the initials “BPM”, borrowing a famous 17th century mathematicians name, and including a programming language all in the same entry – triple word score)

Best hip and cool after some interesting Google searches with various letters from the “Michalik” last name: Caleb Michalik

Attempting to put forth a rational language driven suggestion: Since Amelia means “work”, figured the boy should have a name that means play or playful such as Lalit (Indian), Tao Tao (Madarin), or Hugleikur (Norse – Hulli for short). Pocahontas also meant playful one , but calling the young lad that or even Poca for short would be very career limiting. I do like Hulli Michalik – he can use Hulk as a nickname (Hulk Michalik)!

You could go with Gerhart Michalik and complete the whole famous lost aviator tribute theme… don’t worry, you can use Gary for short. Though when I hear Gary Michalik I think of other developers at work!

And after putting a lot of names with “Michalik” I put forth Jesse Michalik. Maybe too common? But I like the way it flows. He sounds cool already - like he should be down at the beach playing a guitar.

Wow…long time no see, so Congrats on the newest edition…A Capricorn no less… so you KNOW it’s going to be a strong willed intelligent child…very much his own man…

    “ABAB”
That’s what I was thinking Dolly…and you took my Balthazar…lol but mine was chosen from Romeo and Juliet…

    So…
    Balthazar with a “z” not an “s”
    Brayden
    Buckley
    Bale
    Auret
    Bentley
    Banyan
    Dane

  69. HappyGardener Says: December 3rd, 2007 at 7:22 pm

OK, here are some ideas (I tend to favor the old-fashioned names):
David (Davey makes a nice nickname when they’re little and cuddly)
Thomas (also good for nicknames - Adam was nearly a Thomas)
    Drake
    Daniel
    Joshua
    Lawrence
    Richard
    Christopher
    James
    Matthew

Watch out for weird combos with initials and odd middle names; we all know people with names like Richard Moonshadow Moskowitz and few enjoy these monikers!

Wow, I didn’t know we could suggest more than one. I’m such a loser. I’m putting all my eggs in one basket:

    Dakin (pronounced Day-kin)

He’s a character in a play and movie I recently saw called The History Boys. Intelligent, cute, talented, clever, and desirable by both men and women alike. It’s a good omen.
